Reflection: Embracing My Authenticity After 15 Years
For years, I wanted to write this. To share my story. To speak my truth. But fear held me back—fear of judgment, of stigma, of being seen only for my past instead of the person I’ve become. Today, I choose differently.
Who I Am & Why This Matters
I’m Kristine—a wife, mom (to both humans and pets), daughter, sister, and a manager at a substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program. In September 2024, I celebrated 15 years in recovery. When I hit one year clean, I wanted to shout it from the rooftops. I knew I was meant to help others, to educate, to fight the stigma of addiction.
When Stigma Hits Close to Home
Years into my career, I was labeled—not for what I’d done, but for who I used to be. That moment was a reality check. After all the progress I had made, I suddenly felt small, like I had to hide again. So, I stepped away. I spent a year working in homelessness services, gaining new perspective. But my heart remained in recovery work, and eventually, I found my way back.
Even then, I kept my story quiet.
Not because I was ashamed, but because I was afraid.
Why I’m Starting This Blog
I don’t want to live in fear anymore. This blog is my way of reclaiming my voice, of sharing what I’ve learned about healing, resilience, and self-acceptance.
Here, I’ll talk about:
✔️ The realities of recovery—both the triumphs and the struggles
✔️ The tools and lessons that have helped me heal
✔️ How mindfulness and self-care support long-term recovery
✔️ The role of pets in emotional healing
✔️ Breaking stigma—inside and outLet’s Start the Conversation
If you’ve ever felt the weight of your past holding you back, know this: you are not alone.
