What Substance Use Numbs, Recovery Awakens

Why it’s hard to feel again—and why that’s actually a good sign

When you’re using, you don’t realize how much you’re avoiding. Substances don’t just block out pain—they block out everything. Anger, grief, fear… but also joy, peace, and connection. You get used to living behind a foggy wall.
Then recovery comes—and that wall starts to lift. At first, that can feel like being emotionally hit by a truck. But here’s the truth: what you’re feeling now isn’t a problem. It’s progress.

Substance Use Protects by Numbing

Many of us didn’t start using to feel high—we used to feel nothing.
That numbness became the only way we knew how to survive:
• If I don’t feel it, I don’t have to face it.
• If I don’t face it, I can keep functioning.
• If I can keep functioning, maybe I won’t fall apart.
This coping made sense at the time. But in recovery, that old protection becomes a barrier to connection—especially with ourselves.

Recovery Reawakens What You Avoided

Once substances are removed, all the buried emotions begin to rise.
That can include:
• Deep sadness or grief that never got processed
• Anger you never felt safe enough to express
• Shame that hid underneath every decision
• Even joy—which can feel too vulnerable at first
It’s no wonder many in early recovery feel overwhelmed. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re waking up.

Numbness Isn’t Healing—It’s Delayed Pain

Numbness feels like peace at first. But over time, it becomes disconnection, detachment, even depression. The hard truth? You cannot selectively numb. When you shut down pain, you shut down everything else too.
To heal, you have to feel.

“Recovery doesn’t give you your emotions back to punish you—it gives them back to reconnect you.”

If You’re Feeling Again, That’s a Win

Yes, it’s uncomfortable. Yes, it’s messy. But the fact that you’re feeling anything at all is a sign that your nervous system is thawing. You’re stepping back into your life. And that is courageous work.
