We like to think we’ve outgrown the past. That what happened to us then – what we saw, what we heard, what we didn’t get – stays there.
But the truth is, it doesn’t.
Those moments don’t just disappear.
They shape how we see the world.
How we protect ourselves.
How we connect – or avoid connection entirely.
Your inner child didn’t forget.
They were paying attention.
💬 The Roots of Our Responses
That sudden urge to shut down?
That need to please everyone in the room?
That fear of saying no, or asking for help?
It didn’t come out of nowhere.
For many of us in long-term recovery, the real work starts when we begin to realize:
Our current patterns often trace back to our earliest lessons.
And not just the big, obvious traumas – but the silent ones too.
The neglect.
The emotional absence.
The moments we needed safety and got silence instead.
🧠 What Inner Child Work Taught Me
When I began setting boundaries and doing deeper trauma work, I thought it would be about changing my behavior.
But what I didn’t expect was how much I’d need to go back – to childhood – to understand why those behaviors existed in the first place.
Why I felt guilty for protecting my peace.
Why I mistook over-functioning for love.
Why I used to betray myself just to keep others comfortable.
And once I saw where those wounds began, everything softened.
I could stop shaming myself for the way I’d survived.
I could start responding instead of reacting.
That’s the gift of inner child work:
It doesn’t excuse your past – it explains it.
And with that clarity, healing finally has room to happen.
🧸 A Prompt for Today:
If you feel pulled toward this work but don’t know where to begin, try this:
“What did I need to hear as a child, that no one ever said to me?”
Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it land.
You’re not too old. It’s not too late.
💬 A Gentle Reminder:
“When you feel afraid, small, or unworthy – it’s not just you reacting.
It’s the child in you asking for safety.
And you have the power now to give it.”
