How to Let Go of Resentment Toward Others in Recovery

There are wounds that don’t leave visible scars.
They show up in silence. In tension. In the tightness in your chest when someone’s name is mentioned.
In the bitterness that sneaks in when you least expect it.
Resentment toward others is often one of the heaviest things we carry.
Not because we want to – But because we haven’t figured out how to set it down.

🔥 Why It Sticks

When you’ve been hurt, disrespected, or betrayed, resentment can feel like the only thing keeping you safe.
If I stay angry, I stay guarded.
If I never forgive, they can’t hurt me again.
But here’s what happens over time:
That anger doesn’t stay where you put it.
It starts showing up in other places – your trust, your reactions, your peace.
What once felt like protection becomes a burden.
And the longer you carry it, the more it costs you.
Because the truth is:
Holding on doesn’t give you control. It keeps you stuck.

💬 The Truth About Grudges

You may think you’ve moved on.
You might tell yourself it doesn’t matter anymore.
But if their name still makes your heart race…
If that moment still replays in your mind…
If your reaction still doesn’t match the moment – You’re not free from it yet.
And that’s okay.
You don’t have to minimize what happened.
You just have to get honest about how it’s still living inside you.

🧠 How to Start Letting Go: Do the Inventory

You cannot release what you won’t name.
The first step to letting go is writing it down. All of it.

Use this simple framework:
• Who is it toward?
• What happened?
• How did it affect you – emotionally, mentally, spiritually?
• What did it trigger in you? (Fear, shame, pride, abandonment?)

This isn’t about blaming or justifying.
This is about clearing the space resentment has been taking up.
“You can’t release what you’re not willing to face.”

✍️ Reflective Questions:

What grudge are you still carrying in your body or your behavior?

What might shift in your life if you no longer had to carry that weight?

🔜 What’s Coming Tomorrow:

Tomorrow, we turn inward – Because some of the deepest resentments are the ones we hold against ourselves.
