When Everything Hits at Once: Finding Power in the Pause, Growth in the Chaos

Life on Life’s Terms: A Personal Reflection
Last week (and if I’m being honest, this week too) hit hard.
The school year wrapped up – graduation for one of my kids, birthday celebrations, and the anniversary of my dad’s death all landed at once. The emotional weight of each of those things is enough on its own… but life doesn’t usually space things out to make them easier.
On top of that, work was chaotic. Tense. Overwhelming. The kind of environment where stress leaks into every crack – deadlines, pressure, even some bullying. And all the while, people I care about were venting their own struggles and emotions my way.
It was… a lot.
And yet, something was different this time.

I noticed it.
I grounded. I meditated. I used every tool I had – and still, the anxiety remained. But rather than falling into the old, familiar spiral of “you should be handling this better,” I gave myself space to just be.
That alone was a huge shift.
No, it didn’t fix everything. The stress lingered. My confidence wavered. The uncertainty followed me into the weekend and into Monday. But despite that – I recognized growth.
I didn’t let the anxiety take the wheel.
I didn’t let someone else’s behavior dictate my truth.
And I didn’t let the negative self-talk win.
That’s a victory. Maybe not loud. But powerful.

The Power of Reframing

As trauma survivors – and especially as people in recovery – we often crave control. We cling to the idea that if we just try harder, we can keep everything from falling apart. But real healing doesn’t come from tightening your grip. It comes from learning to release it.

That’s what last week taught me.
Instead of spiraling into shame or resentment, I reframed.
Instead of letting the storm swallow me whole, I looked for what was still steady.

I asked myself:
• What did I do well today – even if it was just surviving?
• What would I say to a friend in my shoes?
• What did I learn about myself in this mess?

That shift in thinking didn’t erase the stress, but it took away its power. And it reminded me that small wins are still wins. Holding boundaries. Catching one negative thought. Breathing instead of reacting. That’s growth.

Gratitude in the Middle of It All

Gratitude doesn’t require everything to be perfect. In fact, it’s most powerful when things feel far from okay.
So if you’re in one of those weeks too, ask yourself:
What is still good – even if it’s small?
• What part of you showed up anyway?
• What are you proud of, even if no one else sees it?
Gratitude shifts perspective. It grounds us in the present instead of pulling us into past regrets or future fear. It reminds us of our strength. Our progress. Our resilience.

The Takeaway

This is life on life’s terms. It will get messy. Heavy. Chaotic.
But we always have a choice in how we meet it.
Celebrate the wins – especially the quiet ones.
Reframe the story when it gets too loud.
And never let someone else’s chaos steal your peace.
You don’t have to carry everything. You just have to do the next right thing.

Leave the rest to your higher power – and trust that’s enough.
