Laws That Need to Change: Why We Should Rethink MAT Regulations

If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

Laws That Need to Change: Why We Should Rethink MAT Regulations

There are plenty of laws that make me question my sanity, but if I could change one today, it would be the way some states regulate medication-assisted treatment (MAT)—specifically Suboxone. The inconsistencies in MAT laws across the country are baffling. We’re in the middle of a fentanyl crisis, yet some states seem more focused on restricting access to Suboxone than actually stopping the flow of deadly opioids.

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen patients terrified of relapse—literally fearing for their lives—because their local pharmacy refused to fill their Suboxone prescription. And for what reason? Outdated stigma? Bureaucratic red tape? Meanwhile, fentanyl is running rampant, killing thousands, and yet we’re making it harder for people to access a treatment proven to save lives.

The Data Speaks for Itself

The science is clear: Suboxone significantly reduces the risk of overdose and helps people stay in recovery. We have mountains of research showing how effective it is, yet in some places, it’s treated like a problem instead of part of the solution.

Regulating something that helps people more than the substance that’s killing them? That’s not just frustrating—it’s infuriating. The logic doesn’t add up, and it’s past time for lawmakers to catch up with reality.

A Call for Common Sense

If we’re serious about tackling the opioid crisis, then we need laws that support recovery, not hinder it. That means making MAT more accessible, educating healthcare providers and pharmacies, and removing the stigma surrounding these life-saving treatments.

It’s not about making things “easier” for people with addiction—it’s about giving them a real chance to live. If I could change the laws today, I would make sure every person seeking recovery has access to the treatment they need—without unnecessary roadblocks, judgment, or fear.

Let’s talk about it.
