The Impact of Unrealistic Expectations: When “Shoulds” Overwhelm Your Reality
Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that I had to do everything—and do it perfectly. I should be able to handle work stress without breaking a sweat. I should always be available to help others. I should have it all together. Sound familiar? The problem is, living under the weight of unrealistic expectations doesn’t just make life harder—it makes it exhausting. And if you push yourself too far, eventually, your mind and body will hit the brakes for you.
The Moment I Realized Something Had to Change
For me, work was the biggest eye-opener. My heart is always in the right place, and I genuinely want to help as many people as I can. So, setting boundaries? Not exactly my strong suit. But I learned quickly that no matter how much I cared, I was still just one person. And if I wanted to show up fully for others, I had to take care of myself first.
The breaking point came when I realized I was constantly overwhelmed—mentally foggy, emotionally drained, and feeling like I was stuck on a hamster wheel of stress. And the worst part? The guilt. That nagging feeling that I should be able to handle more. That I should be doing better. That I should just push through.
Then one day, it hit me: the “shoulds” were suffocating me.
Breaking Free: What Actually Helped
I knew I had to do something different. So, I started small. No grand resolutions, no overnight transformations—just small shifts that made a difference.
– Making lists. I know it sounds simple, but crossing things off helped clear the mental clutter. Every time I checked something off, it was like my brain could finally stop obsessing over it.
– Checking in with myself. Instead of running on autopilot, I started asking: How do I actually feel right now? What do I need?
– Prioritizing self-care. Meditation, yoga, journaling, and leaning on my support system—these weren’t luxuries, they were necessities.
– Silencing the negative self-talk. When the old shoulds crept in, I replaced them with a new mantra: I am doing the best I can, one minute at a time.
The Truth About Expectations
Here’s what I’ve learned: You don’t have to do it all. You can’t do it all. And that’s okay. Setting realistic expectations isn’t about settling—it’s about surviving. It’s about making space to breathe, to enjoy life, and to show up as your best self.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a step back. Ask yourself if the expectations you’re holding onto are actually serving you—or if they’re just adding unnecessary pressure. Let go of the guilt. Set boundaries. And most importantly, remind yourself that your best is enough.
