Recovery Reflections – The Pressure to Hold It All

There’s a pressure that comes with being the strong one.

The dependable one.
The one everyone leans on.
And lately, I’ve felt that pressure coming from every direction.

My husband’s relapse, after years of sobriety, cracked something open that I’ve been quietly trying to hold together. My kids are growing, questioning, and sensing more than they say – and I can feel their unspoken worries. My mom is grieving and overwhelmed as she navigates her own transitions. And somewhere in all of this, I’ve caught myself wondering: But what about me?

Because I’m carrying things too.
Not just my own fears and grief – but everyone else’s, layered on top.

It’s not loud. It’s quiet.
Snapping when I mean to stay calm.
Withdrawing when I want connection.
Feeling like I’m always one deep breath away from unraveling – but holding it together because that’s what I do.

But here’s the truth I keep coming back to:
I’m allowed to not have it all together.

This isn’t a post about fixing anything or finding balance.
It’s about being honest – life is heavy right now.
And yet… I’m still here.

Somewhere in the middle of all that weight, there was a moment that brought me back to myself…
We went to a concert – no phones allowed. If you’ve ever been to a Maynard James Keenan show, you know: it’s not about the pictures. It’s about being fully present.

And for those few hours, I was.
No pressure. No performance. Just music, energy, breath – and presence.

That moment didn’t fix everything. But it reminded me:
I don’t have to hold it all.

I can be in the middle of the mess and still be healing.
I can be tired and still be growing.
I can let go of what I can’t control – and trust that God is already holding what I’ve been trying so hard to carry.

So if you’re here too – quietly exhausted, stretched thin, carrying more than you speak out loud…let me say what I needed to hear:
You’re not failing.
You’re not weak.
You’re just human.
And just showing up today is enough.

We must remember –

life on life’s terms isn’t about control, it’s about trust. Trusting that we don’t have to carry the weight of every worry, every outcome, every unknown. Believing in a power greater than ourselves means we can loosen our grip, breathe, and focus only on what’s ours to do: show up, stay present, and keep moving forward, one moment at a time. That’s where our peace lives – not in having it all figured out, but in knowing we’re not carrying it alone.

Reflection Prompt:

What are you trying to hold that’s not actually yours to carry?
Where can you allow yourself to simply be instead of trying to be everything?
