Weekend Reflections: Redefining What It Means to Be Happy

When you ask most people what they want out of life, the answer is simple:
To be happy.

But somewhere along the way, that definition got distorted. Happiness became something to chase rather than something to cultivate. It started to look like a number in the bank account, a promotion at work, the perfect home, or a highlight-reel kind of life.
“If I just had X, then I’d be happy.”
“If I could achieve Y, then everything would feel better.”
Sound familiar?

The truth is, we’ve all been sold the idea that happiness is something outside of ourselves – something we earn, reach, or purchase. But if that were true, why are so many people who seem to “have it all” still speaking out about feeling lost, empty, or unfulfilled?
Because real happiness doesn’t come from the outside.
It starts within.
And if you’re feeling stuck or wondering why the things you thought would bring you joy just aren’t cutting it, maybe it’s time to pause and take a different approach.

Start here:
Reflect on where you’ve been.
Acknowledge what you’ve made it through.
Look at the version of you that survived things the old you never thought you could.
Then ask yourself:
What do I truly need – not to impress others, but to feel peace in my own skin?
What emotions have I been pushing down, and what are they trying to teach me?
What kind of life would feel meaningful, not just successful?

This is where mindfulness comes in. And not in the “sit cross-legged and hum” kind of way – mindfulness as a practical, grounding, daily check-in with yourself.
If you’re in that space right now – questioning your direction, feeling unfulfilled, or simply asking “Is this all there is?” – you’re not broken.               You’re being invited to go deeper.
You don’t need to chase happiness.
You need to reconnect with yourself.

Try this today: A Mindfulness Reset.
You don’t need a retreat or a perfect morning routine to reconnect. You just need a moment – and the willingness to begin again.

Here are five mindfulness tools you can try right now:

• Name What You Feel
Pause and ask yourself: What am I feeling right now – physically, emotionally, mentally?
Use simple words. No need to analyze, just notice. Naming your emotions helps regulate them.

• 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique
Anchor yourself in the present by listing:
5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste or are grateful for
This quick exercise calms your nervous system and brings you back to now.

Single-Task With Intention
Choose one thing you’re going to do today- drink your coffee, take a shower, go for a walk – and do it slowly, with full attention. Let it become a moment of peace.

Breathe with Purpose
Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Repeat 3–5 times.
Let each breath remind you: I am here. I am safe. I am enough.

Journal a Truth You Forget
Write one truth about yourself that gets lost in the noise.
“I am allowed to rest.” “My worth isn’t tied to what I produce.” “I’ve come so far.”
Then say it out loud. Let it land.
Happiness isn’t a destination – it’s a way of being. And you’re allowed to begin again as many times as you need.
