Somewhere along the way, we were all programmed to believe that happiness lives on the other side of “more.”
More success.
More validation.
More money, more followers, more recognition.
And so we chase. We reach. We strive.
But the truth is – most of us are constantly doing without ever really arriving.
We’re exhausted from trying to earn our worth.
This weekend, I found myself thinking about that deeply – not because of one big moment, but because of how normal the pressure has become.
We’re taught to measure our lives in checkboxes and milestones, to associate peace with productivity, and joy with status.
But when you strip all of that away… what actually makes you feel whole?
🌀 The Subtle Cost of Chasing
This constant push for “more” often disguises itself as ambition – but what it really does is keep us in survival mode. It shows up as:
• Resting but still feeling guilty
• Dismissing your wins because there’s always something bigger
• Missing the present because your mind is already ten steps ahead
• Feeling disconnected, even when life looks good on paper
It can be especially hard for people in helping or caregiving roles – moms, partners, clinicians, team leads. When you’re used to holding space for others, it’s easy to lose sight of what you actually need to feel grounded and fulfilled.
🧭 Goals vs. Chasing
Let’s be clear: there’s nothing wrong with having goals.
In fact, having something to work toward has been a healthy motivator for me many times.
But there’s a difference between building your life with intention – and believing that happiness lives somewhere outside of you.
If you expect peace to come after the next win…
If you’re constantly chasing things that don’t align with what you really want…
That’s when it’s time to pause. To take inventory. To ask yourself – is this really for me, or is it what I think I should want?
🌿 Reconnecting With What Matters
True happiness doesn’t come from doing more.
It comes from feeling more.
From being honest with yourself. From noticing when you’re overwhelmed and asking, is this mine to carry?
From returning to the present – because that’s where your life is actually happening.
I’m not happy when I’m chasing.
I’m happiest when I’m grounded. When I’m with my kids, laughing. When I’m not rushing the clock, but remembering my why instead of obsessing over the when.
💬 Try This Today:
• Let yourself finish something and rest. Don’t immediately move to the next thing.
• Write a list of what actually makes you feel joy – without status attached.
• Pause in a moment you’d normally rush through – like breakfast or walking to your car – and let it be enough.
• Ask yourself: What am I chasing, and what do I hope it will make me feel?
You were never meant to outrun your life.
You were meant to live it.
And you’re allowed to slow down and rediscover what matters to you.
